Additions~~

For the the part when drunkimonkey conks out, I wanted something that flowed, something more traditional like the elephant parade scene in Dumbo, release in 1941? I managed to find the clip, so I'll need a close study of it. Drunken fist on ice maybe? I loved the way they animated that sequence, so I'm going to need to do some tests to see how it goes :)

I will need to find a nice music clip for this sequence to follow the rhythm^^

Synopsis~~

DrunkiMonkey~

Will base the main character on the chinese mythical character, MONKEY KING. In the original story, He has a cheeky personality, creates havoc for villagers etc, until the gods decides to tame him. Sends him to follow THE CHOSEN ONE (a priest) on his journey to the west. The gods then put a metal crown on the monkey kings head, whenever he goes out of control, the priest would have the power to hold him down.

For my own story, the main character will be based on the monkey kings CHARACTER not storyline.

Few attributes::
-doesn't think before doing
-cheeky
-gets into laughing fits very easily

Location::
-Set in a bamboo forest
and a cliff

A martial arts artist who takes a break, jumps down a waterfall, takes a sip of what he thinks is tea, becomes drunk. He's knocked out,

For the drunk scene to be in 2D, monkey wakes up in an egg shape design. arms and legs pop out.
-like the drunk elephant parade in the dumbo scene, its set in black background. with a chalk like effect of him "figure skating" with some weapons doing some drunken fist then smashes into a wall.

Only to wake up to being on an edge of a cliff. Still a bit out of it, he cracks up laughing. He laughs so hard, rolling around the floor, till he accidentally slips. The scene ends with him floating upwards on a cloud, with a halo on his head. Then a short flash back of him mistakenly pouring SAKE instead of water into his tea.

THE END

For the elephant parade scene, I'm still not certain if its necessary. It would be nice to have it, to give the clip some flow. But in technical terms, I don''t know if it would be too much to handle having to animate in 2D and 3D. Because of this, I'm now wondering if using cell shaders/toonshades on a 3D model would be easier, since sliding IS so much easier to animate as we have all learnt in first year.

Time : 1-1.30 mins

Target Audience: children from 11 - adults
Distributed on online streaming sites.

My Job: Pre-production/ Character Modeler
Need:
-Another modeler
-Texture/ Lighting Artist possibly by the same person
-Animator

Total: 4 members

Producer will be decided between the group members.
And each member should animate a little as well as edit. To keep the consistency in our final product.

Motivation~~

Heres an animatic I found for an anime. Its pretty inspiring how theirs are already colour coded so the person rendering would know where the shadows should go. And the usage of 3D and 2D layers combined =D

Director : Shouji Saeki
Storyboard : Kazuya Tsurumaki
Animation Director : Chikashi Kubota

Animation : Akemi Ayashi, Yuka Shibata, Keisuke Watanabe, Yokoi Masashi, Ikuo Kuwana, Kouichi Motomura, Shouko Nishigaki, Ryouta Hayatsu, Yusuke Yoshigaki,

The HAND Film-
Adam Ansorge
This animated sequence was really. Super Kung Fu hands animated in 2D! So amazing, the maker must have been a big martial arts fan. I found this on aniboom. The sudden movements and flow was just what I was looking for. Making the audience anticipate more and more since they're bizarrely watching hands fight. It was kind of disturbing at times, and made me look at my own hands for a second.. seeing hands deform themselves like that, although the shape of them some how reminded me of chickens. Like the really old Looney Tunes characters. Such a nostalgic piece =P

Idea Development~~

I have chosen to use the story of IRON Monkey, but develop it further to become my own original character. Realistically thinking, having a frustrated hero find his own style would take a very long time. Here are a few problems I have come across.

(1) A detailed research on martial art poses would be needed. And a really detailed planning.

(2) I've been studying the movements of drunken fist, watching Jackie Chan and Jet Li documentaries that conveniently aired on TV. It seems impossible to illustrate so many sudden movements for my future animators to follow.

(3) PLUS having a hero you would need enemies, being a true HERO you wouldn't have one enemy either, you would have a few. Just thinking of modeling and rigging that many characters becomes an annoyance.

I have to remember I have a time limit. So drastic, changes would have to be made.

Heres a few characters I based my monkey on:

Inspiration~~

A snow monkey struggles to stay warm when all the water has been sucked out. Animation by Han ung Lee

No monkeys were hurt in the making of this animation

Inspiration~~

As for inspiration, I stumbled upon this blog:

http://shawnachan.blogspot.com/2010/05/springshow-2010-portfolio.html

The artist herself is a freelance artist from the US.
I love the way her character designs give off this bizarre deformation, but because of her unique colour palette, the characters come out extra ordinary. The character themselves have lanky features with big heads which look too heavy for the skinny necks to hold up.From colour compositions, and perspectives, the characters all establish their own unique presence on the pages.
Shes also very fluent with life drawing. Something I've been practicing all summer, so its quite cool how shes used her life drawing skills. I'm finding it easier to spot out which artists actually have experience and which doesn't. It really does stand out in our drawings. Even IF they're stylized.

(Since this is her own personal blog+ portfolio I thought it would more polite to put the link up)

Since her characters are based on simple blocked shapes with stick thin limbs I gave this style a try and came out with this: [Character Development Page]
Features I kept in mind: Blocked heads, small shoulders, slightly wider waists and feet just as big as the head.

Was a great experience, experimenting with other people styles. But I'm still not comfortable drawing with this kind of style. I think more time and practice would have to be put into this if i was to continue developing stylized drawings similar to this. Since I'm still looking for my own drawing style, Its crucial I try a bit of everything! =)

This was truly one of the most inspiring piece of animation I found through the summer. It was made by a Japanese animation student I believe. There isn't much about the artist, or the piece of animation. Sadly, the piece was untitled. And was self made. It took the artist half a year as stated here:

途中ですが、間に合ったのはここまででした。無念です。
製作期間2008~2009。実質半年くらい?

Translated::
It is in, and had made it this far. This is regrettable.
2008 - 2009 production period. Virtually half a year?

This was amazing to watch, especially the music, it immerses the audience into the animation. A very good example in how important music is to an animated piece. I've also found many animation students around the world practices animation using balls morphing into objects/ characters. Its a shame we never got to do that for first year. But perhaps, I could incorporate that into my pitch some how? The simplicity of the piece is kind of weird, it doesnt seem like a finished piece and yet it does in another way. I think its because it only uses two colours and various tones of the same colour to capture lighting. Which reminded me of a line animation Jared showed us last year, that was apparently award winning. It makes me wonder if animating my piece in 2D would be a wise choice, since it would give me the chance to draw more on paper.

Initial Ideas~~

Initial Idea (1) :
Volcano baby!
Basically, a Volcanic Dragon.
-Volcano explodes creating ask clouds,
-villagers near by evacuate the area.
-DURING THE DAY,the area is still covered by swarms of media reporters, in helicopters, by foot, S-UV's.
-BY NIGHTFALL, the media leaves to stay at their hotels, and... THE DRAGONS come out to play.
-One lame dragon gets bullied, threatened to be thrown into the volcano that now active because he cant fly.
-Hes on the edge of the volcano, as the gang of other dragons get closer and closer to pushing him off.
-*Looks down at lava, rocks fall, turn to dust.
-He finally trips
-VOLCANIC BABY DRAGON APPEARS
-Lifts him back up into the surface,
-Kicks some butt
-Becomes friends with the lame dragon. Realizes its because he woke up, the ashes blew up, awakening the volcano, which made the villagers leave. Because it was an empty village the dragons came out to "play" but in reality, they've been destroying the place .
-Volcanic dragon decides to say bye and go back in the volcano- and slumbered under the night sky.
-Next morning, everything clears up, the volcano becomes stable, and villages come back.
-The lame dragon is bullied no more, and instead, he gets a new friend =D

(This idea came from the Ash Clouds. It was constantly on the news, and apparently ASHES were falling from the sky at the time, but I really didn't see anything.)

Initial Idea (2) :
Phill and Bill
A story of two fat rats, both in their own worlds, and how ignoring each other could result in awkward situations.
Phill - A fat rat whos delusional, hes an online dating site freak. And hes quite popular =O Since hes so popular online, he believes hes the most smexy being on earth, so he sings and dances by himself while complimenting his charms...
Bill - Another fat rat, but this time, hes a games addict. Hes a worldwide champion at COD, has totally given up with reality and believes his place is on the "fields".

-Phill decides to show his true self to his online GF, hes nervous, finally does so. However
-His virtual "GF" then freaks, screaming how ugly the rat is, and if it was a joke
-She panics, webcam drops and breaks.
-Hes then very emotional
-starts crying.. drops off the human chair, and smacks his head hard on the ground.
-he den goes a bit nutz, starts flirting with every mouse in the office.
-Until he gets up to the mouse his friends using to play COD.

Initial Idea (3) :
Fruit and Veg at WAR
(Had to cook dinner that night, and the kitchen was strangely FILLED with fruit and veg.)

Initial Idea (4) :
Kawaii Not

(re-created animated sequences from the book)

Initial Idea (5) :
Iron Monkey
A tale of how a true martial artist got frustrated, and in convenience of cooking a bit of his lunch, he find his own kung fu style. Which gives him the title of Iron Monkey. He uses a wok and ladle as his weapons to develop a new fighting style that surpasses his enemy.
(Watched Hercules that night on TV, then felt like watching IRON MONKEY a Chinese version of the Robinhood story, but with martial arts instead of bows and arrows.)

First Post^^

Hellooo~~
and
Welcome to my 3rd Year blog^^

To give a brief on my current situation.
As 2nd year students at Ravensbourne, We were given a project to work on through our long summer. The project was to help us develop ideas for our FINAL PROJECT during our time at Ravensbourne. We aimed to get a PITCH and perhaps a storyboard ready for our first day of term.

In response, I gathered a few ideas from just everyday life. From news -tv - youtube and people generally around me. During my break, I spent a lot of time exploring the world of photography, capturing various angles, trying to grasp skills which would make my cinematic skills improve, and generally help me create more diverse; perspective angles. I've been going through many blogs, and people flickr galleries and deviantarts. Its helped inspired me to create something a little more interesting. In my 2nd year at Ravensbourne and even watching a few student animations on aniboom. I've noticed. Since many students try to capture emotion and movements so much, they use basic camera movements. I wanted to change this. I understand how easy it is to fall for Maya's straight camera angles, and how frustrating it is to plan more dynamic angles, however, if I was to capture this essence, this complexity in my 3rd year animation. I should be able to create a true master piece.
Many of the more success animations I've seen online, were the ones that played with perspectives or colour more.

For me to capture more diverse angles, I needed create a super storyboard, one with many camera angles which flows in between the same environment as films have. Since I wanted to create an animation with action and running I needed to practice drawing perspective angles more. So I set an aim for myself to draw at least a page of dynamic figures, working with proportions, controlling and figuring out the larger objects in front to the objects behind. At this point I really missed Life Drawing with Dan in first year. I relied on watching cartoons and coping the more interesting poses, drawing people around me and using posemaniacs.

During my holiday, I also found a new program, a few actually, but one I actually started using almost everyday. Its apparently the Japanese version of Painter, However, I found its much smoother. Its actually alot smoother to work with, and its finally in English! Even so, I still use Photoshop, since many textural brushes don't exist in the new software. Instead, you are able to make more complex brushes to imitate everyday art equipment like pencils, crayons and such.

To sum up::
I used my summer to explore the world of Photography, playing with diverse perspective angles , and trying out other colour compositions -such as lomography.

and
Working hard on drawing perspective angles with correct line qualities to improve my pre-production work and find my own style.
