Dan's Unit

Here is a new page for unit ANP09305. Within this unit we were asked to initiate and develop new content solutions that will challenge our productions. We’ve been encouraged to BREAK boundaries, whilst realistically working on several projects at a time. We are required fulfill THREE roles, Artist,Animation and Technical. And choose which to mainly focus on.
I’ve chosen to focus on ARTIST. I want to play the role of  a cinematographer and do concept work for several projects. Providing I would have an outlined theme to follow, my aim would be to produce a portfolio of different style, to show my potential and flexibility in various ways. To do this, I will be experimenting on various programs. I believe sticking to one platform would limit the potential in creating an intriguing style.
So I have installed parallels and bootcamp on my macbookpro to work on a windows OS  too.

To clear things up. I'm currently part of two groups.

(1) Smitten, Matt's Group
(2) THE WOMB - Tex's Group
     MayFly, Iredia's Group

(1) In Smitten, I have the role of drawing concepts, and EXTERNAL environments. I will be working on perspectives and lighting. The importance of the two plays a great deal in the overall effect on the film since its 2D. I will need to work on different techniques to express different organic props on screen. We aim to use "Le Royaume (The King and the Beaver ) as our primary goal.
To give that outstanding effect, I have introduced a Japanese painting software, similar to Corel Painter to Michelle for that soft touch. The brings out our graphic tablets true abilities out. Since the sensitivity works perfectly in sync with the software!! We dont get that laggy "bridge" between Photoshop and the tablet. So we aim to use both software's together. Since Photoshop still has features that will come useful during the process.

(2) Last Day of The Dayfly. I have the role of drawing concepts and taking the role of cinematographer again. I'll be working on the same sort of areas as in Smitten. But capturing an authentic chinese painted look. For this project I'll be studying TVPAINT. This was recommended by Mike (our tutor). He loved the way I expressed colours and line quality in the concepts I ALREADY did for SMITTEN.

Furthermore, all of my progress will be documented within the main body of this blog. Since this unit fits perfectly into our graduation films. I see no point in starting a new one off. I've noticed I have developed a habit of evaluating events that happen during "meetings" with my team members. Alot of important aspects get decided at the most random times, so I try to record what happens before I forget.

In THE WOMB, everyone HAD the role of character designer. I will be doing dynamics for this project during second term. However, to my understanding, Tex has decided to work on his project as a one man band for this term.

As quoted from his blog... "JUST so everyone is clear and it is up and down in writing, please for now just focus on your own projects. I'll let everyone know when their talents are needed, good luck!"

[UPDATE:: ALL MEMBERS have been taken off THE WOMB. Tex has decided to go his own way around the project. In a way, I'm pleased over this, since there was lack of communication within the group, since we were leader-less from quite some time. His attendance made us worry for the projects "health" in terms of the amount of work and guidance we had as a team]

Anyways.. Here are a few sketches are worked on digitally for BEFORE Tex announced this.
A lot of this will be copied and pasted from the other blogs I will be uploading on. so here goes^^

THE WOMB
"Here are three designs I quickly re-skecthed digitally. I then coloured the best looking one.. but as you can see.. he looks a bit TOO cute for this project. other initial sketches coming soon~~ after I fix my scanner up =D

His features were too rounded, and was missing that edgey, bizarre look.
Points I kept in mind:
-exaggeration
-Unexpected colour combos
-quirkiness?
After pointing out these 3 features, I did further research in Vinyl designer figure designs and works of Jeremy Ville whos also done a bit of fire designing.=D
I used the same colour palette as “Tree Hugger” A vinyl DUNNY design.

The result? ………………

I NEVER draw in this style.. personally don't go for quirky designs since I'm stuck in drawing cute designs all the time, so I guess this project with Tex's encouragement has really tried to stretch my skills further, and out of my own comfort zone! Overall, I'm very pleased with the outcome, even though Tex doesnt seem to like the moon. It was a great experience! I also learnt a new colouring technique in SAI, and I've been much more adventurous with colour! So thumbs up!! (Y)
